Palakkadu: The High Court will review the petition submitted by the accused individuals seeking the quashing of the NIA investigation into the murder of RSS worker Sreenivasan. In their plea, the accused contend that there are no grounds for invoking the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in this case and allege that the NIA’s actions are politically motivated.
The defendants argue that the decision to transfer the case to the NIA is legally questionable. Among those who have approached the court are ten accused individuals, including Karama Ashraf Maulvi. The court is expected to make a decision regarding this petition today.
The accused maintain that it is unlawful for the NIA to take over the case once the final charge sheet had already been submitted. They also assert that the transfer of case files from the Sessions Court to the NIA Court did not adhere to established legal procedures.
The investigative team previously revealed that Sreenivasan was marked for assassination according to a hit list compiled by the Popular Front. Subsequently, the Union Home Ministry included the Srinivasan murder case among the incidents that led to the ban on the Popular Front. Following this development, the NIA initiated proceedings to take control of the case. Initially, local police had arrested 42 individuals, including leaders of the Popular Front, in connection with the case, after which the NIA took them into custody for further investigation.
The gruesome murder of Sreenivasan occurred on April 16, 2022, at a shop in Melamuri, Palakkadu. He was brutally attacked by a group of six individuals who arrived on three motorcycles. Srinivasan suffered three severe head wounds and about ten deep wounds on his body.
