THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sooraj S Kumar, the prime accused in the Uthra murder case, has been granted bail in the dowry harassment case. Additionally, Sooraj’s father, Surendra Panicker, mother Renuka, and sister Surya are also registered as accused in this case.

In addition to the murder case, the crime branch is also investigating the dowry harassment case, and the charge sheet has already been filed.

The witness examination of Uthra’s father, Vijayasenan, and her brother, Vishnu, has been completed in the case.

During the court proceedings, Public Prosecutor Adv. Shibdas represented the victim, while Adv. Anees Thangal Kunju appeared for the accused.

The crime took place on May 7, 2020, when Uthra, aged 25, was bitten by a cobra snake that had been intentionally introduced into her bedroom by her husband, Sooraj, at her parent’s home in Anchal, Kollam district.

The court has deemed this case to be one of the rarest of rare and has sentenced Sooraj to 17 years in prison, along with double life imprisonment, and a monetary penalty of 5 lakh rupees. The court exempted Sooraj from the death penalty, considering his age.
