Kerala’s debt crisis: Postal department suspends RC and license distribution

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Postal department has informed that the department has suspended the distribution of Vehicle Registration Certificates (RC) and driving licenses in Kerala due to non-payment of Rs 2.84 crore owed by the Kerala State Motor Vehicle Department (MVD). The Postal department has pointed out that the outstanding amount is owed by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) to the Postal department for the delivery of driving licenses to the addressees from July to September.

In the letter to the MVD also mentioned, the Postal department did not include the outstanding amount for the October month.

The printing of RC books for all Regional Transport (RT) and Sub-RT Regional Transport offices has been shifted to Kochi since October. The Postal department has clarified that it collects items every day and delivers them to the respective addresses by speed post on the next day itself. But in this situation, for the service, the MVD has to pay crores of amount.

In response to this situation, the letter from the Postal Department to the MVD states that their service with the MVD will be temporarily suspended until the outstanding dues are paid. Therefore, even if individuals receive a message on their registered mobile phone indicating that the RC or driving license has been prepared by the MVD, it will not be delivered to the addressees starting today.

The State MVD also owes crores of rupees to Palakkad ITI, which provides technical support for printing RC books and driving licenses.

Kerala State is currently facing a record debt crisis in its history, with several departments being indebted for significant amounts. Reports suggest that the Kerala government lacks fiscal responsibility, as nearly every department under it is sinking into debt, and the State is in a debt trap.

In this context, the Finance department is not controlling the extravagance and unnecessary expenditures by the state government.

The creation of unnecessary positions with high honoraria and the organization of unnecessary foreign trips are seen as favoritism and nepotism perpetuated by the government.

Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition, VD Satheesan, has accused the government of misallocating funds and resources for the Keraleeyam 2023 celebrations in the State capital, citing it as an example of the government’s lack of financial priorities.

Several others have also criticized the government for spending money on non-priority areas while the state is deeply in debt. It is worth noting that the UDF has already announced their boycott of the Keraleeyam 2023 celebrations.
