Review bombing: Malayalam film producers decided to collaborate with only accredited digital media for movie promotions

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a move to defend against review bombing, film producers have decided to collaborate only with accredited digital media organizations and YouTubers.

(Review bombing is an intentional act on digital platforms, where a large number of individuals with multiple accounts post negative user reviews online in an effort to harm the sales or popularity of a product, service, or business.)

Recently several newly released Malayalam films were attacked by review bombing.

In this situation, the film producers have also decided to compile a list of authorised reviewers who will be invited to the promotions of their movies. This decision was made during a meeting of the members of the Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) and the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) in Kochi on November 1.

The association has also committed to strictly adhering to the Film Chambers’ decision to ban film and audience reviews inside theaters. “It is not fair to have reviewers critique films within theater complexes. We will also engage in discussions with the theater owners’ association. We know that we can’t stop them if they decide to review bomb films outside the theatre complex. Also, digital content creators who are not accredited will not be invited to any of our film promotions,” said producer G Suresh Kumar.

FEFKA General Secretary B Unnikrishnan expressed the association’s willingness to cooperate with the producers, emphasizing that the producers’ decisions should be respected, as they are the individuals who invest money in film projects.

Recently, the film industry in Kerala raised concerns about the negative impact of review bombing on many Malayalam movies. The High Court also intervened in the issue following a petition by the director of ‘Aromalinte Adyathe Pranayam,’ alleging concerted efforts to review bomb the film.

Last week, the Cochi City Police registered the first case of review bombing. The case was reportedly filed based on a complaint by Ubaini, the director of the movie ‘Rahel Makan Kora.’ However, it is worth mentioning that, in most cases, intentional negative reviews are posted by fake IDs on social media platforms created for this purpose.
