Thiruvananthapuram: The public exchequer allocated Rs. 30,500 for the purchase of eyeglasses for R Bindu, Minister of Higher Education and Social Justice. The allocation was made in response to the minister’s request, with the glasses costing Rs. 30,500 at an eyeglass store in the state capital.

The allocation for the minister was formalised through an order issued on November 3rd. The order authorized the reimbursement of Rs. 30,500 for the eyeglasses purchased from Thiruvananthapuram ‘Lens and Frames’ for Minister R Bindu of the Higher Education and Social Justice Department, dated April 28, 2023. This expenditure has raised questions, given the government’s financial challenges.

This isn’t the first time eyeglass purchases by government officials have attracted controversy. In the first Pinarayi government, Former Speaker P Sri Ramakrishnan spent Rs. 49,900 on eyeglasses, and Health Minister KK Shailaja’s eyeglasses cost Rs. 28,000, sparking public debate.
