ERNAKULAM: The Ernakulam POCSO court is conducting the sentencing hearing today for the rape and murder of five-year-old girl in Aluva.

Last week, the Ernakulam POCSO court found Asfaq Alam (29), the sole accused, guilty in the brutal rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Aluva.

The sentencing hearing for this brutal crime is currently underway, with Judge K Soman presiding over the case. If all proceedings, including the hearing, are completed, there is a possibility that the sentence will be pronounced today.

All 16 charges, including abduction, rape, murder, and destroying evidence against the accused, have been proven.

The prosecution has informed the court that the accused has no mental problems and should be given the maximum punishment.

Yesterday, the jail authorities submitted the mental status examination report of the accused to the court in a sealed cover.

The verdict was delivered on the 100th day after the crime, and the trial for this case was completed in 26 days.

The tragic incident took place on July 28, 2023, in Aluva, Ernakulam district. The trial officially commenced on October 4.
