Palakkad: The plight of 3,600 farmers in Palakkad continues as they are yet to receive payment for the paddy they supplied to the state. The state government owes approximately Rs 30 crore to these farmers, with 24,300 farmers in the final phase awaiting their dues. The responsibility to disburse these payments falls on SBI and Canara Bank, which signed an agreement with Supplyco.
The pending payments affect 17,660 farmers in Palakkad, along with 6,640 farmers from Alappuzha and Kottayam districts. Notably, 1,900 farmers in Palakkad and 1,700 farmers in the other two districts are still waiting for their rightful compensation for the rice supplied.
A key concern voiced by a group of farmers is the demand for direct payment rather than categorizing the rice price as a PRS loan. Meanwhile, some farmers have taken the matter to the High Court, urging SupplyCo to pay the rice price directly instead of treating it as a loan. The High Court directed SupplyCo to release the pending amounts and submit a comprehensive report on the matter.
