WAYANAD: In the most recent tragedy, Joy alias Thomas (59), was reported to have hanged himself at Kallody in Wayanad district, marking the third farmer suicide in Kerala this month.
Police reports suggest that Joy, a dairy farmer, took his life due to a debt trap, burdened by four bank loans. A relative revealed that Joy had previously expressed depression about continuing with agriculture in the state, stating that it seemed impossible to sustain a livelihood.
Yesterday, another farmer named Suhbramaniyan, a native of Iritty in Kannur district, had committed suicide.
Last week the suicide of a paddy farmer KG Prasad from Alappuzha district, had sparked a public outcry against the Kerala state government.
In this situation, the third farmer’s suicide has sparked intense protests against the Kerala government. The government’s disregard for the farmers’ issues, while allocating funds to non-priority areas such as Keraleeyam 2023 and Nava Kerala Sadas, has drawn objections from BJP leaders in the state.
