Kannur: In response to the tragic incident of a farmer’s suicide in Iritty, EP Jayarajan, the LDF Convenor, has sparked controversy by belittling the circumstances surrounding the death of Subrahmanyan (71). Jayarajan dismissed the gravity of the situation, attributing the reasons for the suicide to what he considers “very simple” factors.
Addressing media queries, Jayarajan asserted that the reasons behind the suicide were, in his view, “very simple” and attributed them to the intricacies of the human psyche. He questioned the notion that farmers commit suicide solely due to factors such as the lack of pension, emphasizing that the challenges faced by farmers, like the wild elephant menace on crops, are longstanding and not sudden occurrences.
“Is there a need to commit suicide because of wild elephant rampage on crops?” Jayarajan questioned. He highlighted the persistent destruction caused by elephants in various regions, including Ambayathode, Kottiyoor, Kelakam, Kanichar, Wayanad, and Idukki. The LDF convenor seemed to downplay the severity of the situation, suggesting that such challenges were not new and had been ongoing for an extended period.
The farmer in question, Subrahmanyan (71), took his own life by hanging in his rented house in Ayyankunnu Panchayat in Iritty, Kannur. The elderly man had abandoned his two-acre farm and residence due to the severe disturbances caused by wild animals. Additionally, the stagnation of old age pension added to his distress.
