“Government agencies themselves violate law”: HC criticizes illegal flex boards and flags on the roadsides

Kochi: The High Court has strongly criticized against the widespread presence of illegal flex boards and flags on roads, asserting that government agencies themselves are breaching the law. Justice Devan Ramachandran expressed concern over the abundance of unauthorized flex boards, featuring images of organization officials lining the roads. He questioned why fines had not been imposed for such violations.

The court was addressing a petition seeking the removal of these unlawful boards and flags from the roadsides. Justice Devan Ramachandran instructed authorities to provide details on the number of cases where action had been taken and the amount of fines collected. Justice Devan Ramachandran emphasized that new Kerala does not require such roadside displays, attributing their existence to the vanity of individuals wanting to showcase their own images. He pointed out that other states do not engage in such illegal practices.

The judge also remarked that committee members tasked with addressing this issue must be summoned for accountability. The single bench observed instances where, even after removing the flag, the stick attached to it was left unattended. The court will reconvene to hear the plea again next week.
