Idukki: As part of the Nava Kerala Sadas, the police in Idukki have issued directives to cease temporary perunnal (festival) trade along the route expected to be taken by the Chief Minister and ministers. The decision to evacuate these stalls is based on the grounds that it could create a traffic jam.
December 10 marks the main day of celebration at St. Mary’s Knanaya Catholic Church, situated in Oorakunnu, Muttom. The police have justified their decision by stating that the street vending stalls could create travel problems for the Chief Minister and ministers who are going from Thodupuzha to Idukki later in the afternoon.
The street vendors, dependent on the day’s sales for their sustenance, express concerns about this. They said that if they cannot do business on the Perunnal day, it will create a potential financial loss.
