Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of challenges in providing essential goods at subsidized rates, Supplyco is contemplating a shift towards selling liquor as a survival strategy. The state government, grappling with an economic crisis, is gearing up for a potential pivot, while uncertainties loom over the commencement of the Christmas market.
A preliminary study has been initiated to explore the possibility of adopting a liquor sales model similar to that of Consumerfed. The implementation of this plan awaits legal approval from the government. Notably, Consumerfed, following Beverages Corporation’s outlets, boasts the highest number of small liquor outlets in the state, currently operating 41 retail outlets and three wine shops.
Supplyco, with its widespread public distribution points across all districts, may also join the liquor sales initiative. A potential 20 percent profit margin could be realized on the sale of alcohol sourced from beverages. The move is seen as a strategic measure to address the financial challenges faced by Supplyco.
