Thiruvananthapuram: The National Teachers Union has voiced opposition to the inclusion of a question regarding the CPI (M) mouthpiece in a Sanskrit scholarship examination for Class 10, conducted by the General Education Department. PS Gopakumar, State President of the National Teachers Parishad, criticised the education department for including a question about the Deshabhimani Sahitya Award. He said that it is an affront to the Sanskrit language and language lovers.
The 15th question in the scholarship exam, “Who has won the Deshabhimani Sahitya Award 2023?” has drawn criticism as it is irrelevant in the Kerala public sphere. Gopakumar argued that only readers of the Deshabhimani newspaper would be aware of this award. So, it is inappropriate to include such questions in a Sanskrit scholarship examination.
The Sanskrit Scholarship Exam, organized annually by the Department of General Education for LP, UP, and high school students, aims to promote and encourage the study of Sanskrit. Gopakumar emphasised that the inclusion of such an immature and unrelated question compromises the integrity of the examination. He called for the education department to take corrective action, including the possibility of a lifetime ban on the questioner responsible for detracting from the exam’s purpose.
