THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid the severe financial crisis, the Kerala government allocated Rs. 12.5 lakhs to KV Thomas, the Special Representative of Kerala in Delhi, as a Christmas gift. It’s reported that the amount was released by relaxing Treasury control.

The former Union Minister and senior Congress leader left the Congress party after being denied seat in the Lok Sabha elections. Followed by he was appointed as the Special Representative of Kerala in Delhi by the Left government in January 2023. KV Thomas was appointed with an honorarium, three personal staff, and a driver.

Now, amidst the financial crisis, the honorarium and salaries for the four staff members were sanctioned by relaxing Treasury control.

Then, Thomas’s appointment sparked several controversies.

Recently, the Kerala High Court questioned the Kerala government for not disbursing social welfare pension to Mariyakutty, an elderly woman from Idukki. However, the government cited the state’s financial crisis as the reason for not disbursing Rs. 1,600 for the social welfare pension.

The court also severely criticized the government for the extravagant ‘Nava Kerala Sadas’ campaign program, which requires crores of expenditure.
