Thiruvananthapuram: A fraud gang stole Rs 25,000 from the Thiruvananthapuram Commissioner’s office account. They stole the money by sending a fake message to the mobile number linked to the account. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
All communication pertaining to the City Police Commissioner’s Office transactions comes from the bank to the official mobile number of the Accounts Officer. The gang sent a fake message to the number. Posing as the bank, the message claimed that the account would be cancelled unless the Know Your Customer (KYC) process was renewed immediately. The message also included a link for KYC renewal.
The accounts officer clicked on the link, and an OTP was also forwarded. With the OTP, the fraud gang took ₹25,000 from the commissioner’s office account at the Jagathy branch of the bank. As soon as the police became aware of the transaction, they notified the control room and initiated measures to block the money. Police have disclosed that they received a tip-off regarding the identity of the culprits and have started an investigation into the matter.
