THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Health Department has issued a strict directive against selling medicines without a doctor’s prescription. State Health Minister Veena George emphasized that strict action will be taken against any medical shops selling medicines without a doctor’s prescription.
The Health Department also mandated that accurate records of antibiotic sales must be maintained by respective medical shops. Additionally, the department advised minimizing the use of antibiotics whenever possible.
Frequent consumption of antibiotic drugs raises the risk of contracting various diseases. Continuous use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines can render them ineffective, making more infections or impossible to treat. This increases the risk of disease spread.
The state government’s directive highlighted the World Health Organization’s (WHO) warning about Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines.
