Ernakulam: The High Court has initiated a suo motu case in Kozhikode concerning the suicide of Valayathu Joseph (77), a differently-abled man, due to the non-payment of pension. The court has taken action against the Department of Social Justice, the Kozhikode district collector, and the Chakkittapara panchayat secretary. Further action in this matter is pending, with permission sought from the Chief Justice. Justice N Nagaresh voluntarily intervened in the case.

Joseph alias V Pappachan, a resident of Chakkittapara Grama Panchayat, Muthukad, Valayam, was discovered hanging at his residence by neighbors on Tuesday. Reports indicate that Joseph had been facing severe financial crises for the past five months after his disability pension was discontinued. Joseph had lodged a complaint on November 9 with various authorities, including ministers and the collector, urging the release of his pension. However, as he lost confidence in the government and felt disheartened, Joseph took the tragic step of hanging himself at his home.
