Ernakulam: Cochin Shipyard has signed a European contract valued at Rs. 500 crore. Under this agreement, Cochin Shipyard is set to construct and deliver a hybrid Service Operation Vessel (SOV). The shipbuilding firm, Norway’s Vard Group AS will be responsible for the design and construction of the vessel, slated for delivery in 2026. The contract also encompasses the construction and delivery of an additional ship also.
This vessel, to be designed by Vard AS, is a crucial component for operations, service, and maintenance within the offshore energy sector. Notably, the vessel’s propulsion system integrates a hybrid electric setup alongside three 1300 KW diesel generators, further complemented by a sizable lithium battery. This innovative design is anticipated to significantly curtail environmental pollution.
The ship’s main cabin boasts the capacity to accommodate up to 54 technicians and crew members, featuring top-notch safety systems and amenities. Beyond its operational capabilities, the vessel aligns with environmental consciousness by utilising a combination of electricity and diesel, aiming to minimise carbon emissions.
Kochi Shipyard, with over two decades of expertise in shipbuilding, continues to make remarkable strides in the industry. The company has previously delivered state-of-the-art ships to various countries, including America, Germany, and Norway. Currently, the shipyard is actively working in constructing eight multi-purpose vessels for a prominent German company.
