Thiruvananthapuram: SFI vehemently criticized the Kerala budget presented by the Finance Minister, KN Balagopal, on February 5th, for the 2024-25 financial year. SFI opposed the budget announcement to initiate universities from foreign countries in Kerala.

SFI opposed the budget announcement to start campuses of foreign universities in Kerala. SFI Kerala state President K Anusree stated that there is concern about foreign universities coming to Kerala, and SFI does not agree with this.

She highlighted that the SFI has a history of protesting against even granting ‘autonomous’ status to colleges. Anusree added that SFI’s position is that the government should control and regulate the entry of private universities. Therefore, SFI strongly opposes permitting foreign universities in Kerala.

While presenting the state budget yesterday, the Kerala state Finance Minister Balagopal said that the Kerala government will take actions to start private universities in Kerala.

Citing that the number of students from Kerala embarking to foreign countries for higher education is increasing, Balagopal said that the Kerala government plans to address this situation by inviting universities from foreign countries and granting tax concessions to launch their campuses in Kerala. It was also mentioned in the budget presentation that the decision to form a task force of expatriate academics.

SFI raised its voice against Balagopal’s announcement.
