Pathanamthitta: The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has launched a severe attack on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of taking sides in the ongoing dispute between two factions of the Malankara Church.
Dr. Yuhanon Mar Diascoros Metropolitan, President of the Orthodox Church media wing, stated that as the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan should consider all the people of Kerala equally and impartially.
While attending a press conference in Kottayam, Dr. Yuhanon Mar Diascoros expressed disappointment with Pinarayi Vijayan’s provocative remarks and biased actions aimed solely at gaining applause. “It is painful when the Chief Minister becomes the spokesman of only one section instead of remaining neutral on contentious issues,” said Yuhanon Mar Diascoros Metropolitan.
The issue arose from a speech made by Pinarayi Vijayan during a meeting in Puthencruz in Ernakulam on February 4. According to Orthodox Church leadership, Pinarayi’s speech at Puthuncruz exposed a deliberate attempt to stir up trouble, despite the matter being resolved by the Supreme Court. They also cautioned that it could potentially drag the church into prolonged legal battles once again. Rather than promoting peace by adhering to the Supreme Court’s decision, the Chief Minister’s statements have the potential to ignite new disputes, and rise to law-and-order issues.
While attending a programme at Puthencruz, Pinarayi Vijayan said that the government is keen to ensure the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church exists as it is.
Yuhanon Mar Diascoros stated that some are trying to secure their positions by creating problems in society, which is unfair. He also mentioned that some are attempting to create vote-banks by dividing communal leaders. Communal leaders should understand and act accordingly, he added.
Yuhanon Mar Diascoros further added that Pinarayi Vijayan is ignoring the approaches of the Orthodox Church.
