Wayanad: A 25-member Rapid Response Team (RRT) from Karnataka has joined forces with the Kerala Forest Department to tranquilize Belur Makhna, the wild elephant that killed a man in Wayanad a few days ago. The mission to tranquilize the elephant enters its sixth day. The Karnataka team is experienced in such operations and has successfully captured a wild elephant in Belur after ten days of effort.
Belur Makhna, previously spotted in the Manivayal near Panavally, has since moved to the Karicode forest area, accompanied by another mozayana (tuskless male elephant). Their recent movement across the Kattikkulam -Tholpetty road has added complexity to the situation.
However, the presence of another mozayana complicates the matter, delaying the tranquilization mission. Tranquilizing is only possible after separating both wild elephants. Belur Makhna needs to be brought to a location where the tranquilizing process can be carried out, which poses the main challenge for the forest department.
