Wayanad: The man critically injured in a wild elephant attack in Wayanad on Friday morning succumbed to his injuries by afternoon. The deceased, identified as Paul (52), was a resident of Pakkam and an employee of Vana Samrakshana Samithi (VSS) at Kuruva Island.
Paul, critically injured in the attack, was rushed to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for urgent medical intervention. Despite efforts to stabilise his condition, he passed away around 3:25 pm.
The incident occurred in the Cheriyamala forest region along the Pakkam-Kuruva Island route, where Paul who was going to work, was attacked by a herd of elephants at around 9:30 am. He had attempted to flee from the place but fell to the ground, sustaining severe injuries.
Reports indicate that coworkers discovered Paul in a wounded state and immediately took him to Mananthavady Medical College. He was then transferred to Kozhikode Medical College by 3:00 pm but could not be saved. Doctors said that he died due to internal bleeding and spinal cord injuries sustained during the attack.
This incident comes amidst heightened tensions surrounding human-wildlife conflicts, worsened by the recent death of Ajeesh, who was attacked by the wild elephant Belur Makhana. The communities residing in affected regions have expressed frustration over the authorities’ inadequate response to addressing these pressing issues.
In response to these incidents, various political parties have called for a hartal in Wayanad district on Saturday.
