Wayanad: The Wayanad Government Medical College, situated in Mananthavady, is reported to be operating without essential facilities. The absence of adequate medical staff and ICU infrastructure has raised concerns, particularly highlighted by a recent incident where a critically injured individual attacked by a wild elephant could not be transferred to Kozhikode Medical College due to the lack of an ambulance equipped with ICU facilities. Doctors are forced to rely on charitable trusts for assistance.
Allegations have been made regarding the death of the Kuruva Tourism Project employee, identified as Paul, due to delayed treatment. Critics argue that if there had been a functioning cardiothoracic and vascular surgery department along with efficient surgical systems, Paul’s life might have been saved. Despite efforts to seek assistance from external experts, the medical college’s shortcomings in emergency medicine and the non-operational catheterization laboratory have hindered effective treatment. The promised cath lab, announced in 2018, is yet to be operational.
According to locals, the Wayanad Government Medical College appears to be a medical college in its name only, failing to provide essential healthcare services. The ICU ambulance has remained non-operational for six months. Due to bureaucratic hurdles, permission to repair the ambulance at the vehicle dealer’s centre was denied by the health department directorate, insisting it be taken to a government-approved workshop.
