Health Department issues guidelines for Attukal Pongala amid temperature hike

Thiruvananthapuram: As the Attukal Pongala festival approaches, the Health Department has issued crucial guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of participants amid temperature hikes.

Health Minister Veena George emphasised the importance of adhering to safety measures due to the temperature hike expected during the celebration. She urged everyone partaking in Pongala festivities to closely follow the instructions provided by the Health Department.

In preparation for the event, the Health Department has deployed medical teams at various locations and introduced ambulance services. Additionally, individuals can seek medical advice by calling the Disha helpline numbers 104, 1056, 0471 2552056 and seeking a doctor’s advice.

Important Guidelines for Pongal Participants:

  • Wear light cotton clothes and cover your head with a hat or a cloth to avoid direct sunlight exposure.
  • Drink only clean or boiled water to stay hydrated, and consume fruits high in water content, like watermelon, orange.
  • Wash your hands and face frequently.
  • Take regular breaks in the shade to avoid overheating.
  • Keep children away from fires and ensure they drink water frequently.
  • Take regular medicines without interruption.

Safety measures to prevent burns:

  • Avoid wearing loose clothing that may easily catch fire.
  • Do not keep flammable items near the hearth.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby for emergencies.
  • Remain calm and act accordingly if clothes catch fire; extinguish flames immediately with water. Seek assistance from nearby individuals if needed.
  • Use first aid promptly in cases of burns.
  • Cool the burned area with water, and avoid attempting to remove clothing if it adheres to the skin.
  • Refrain from applying unnecessary creams to the burn area. Seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Ensure that all fires are extinguished with water after the Pongal festival.

Food Safety Guidelines:

  • Prioritise hygiene by washing your hands before eating.
  • Avoid consuming open food items purchased from unverified sources.
  • Ensure fruits are thoroughly washed before consumption.
  • Do not litter, utilise designated waste disposal areas.
