Kottayam: The Syro-Malabar Church has strongly condemned the attack against a priest at Poonjar in Kottayam district. The Church said that the attack is an assault on the religious freedom of the Christians and encroachment on the right to worship. The Church registered their strong protest in a press release by the Syro-Malabar Public Affairs Commission. The press release added that those who were involved in the attack and those who took part in the conspiracy must be brought to justice.
The Public Affairs Commission of the Church also said that attacks like this are becoming frequent in Meenachil Taluk. The police and other law agencies must become more alert and take strong actions. Just because many of the culprits are juveniles, their crime cannot be seen lightly, the Commission said.
The Commission also remarked that these attacks cannot be seen as simply anti-social or drug mafia related activities and doubts that there is a motive to flare up communal tensions in the area. Therefore it is important to bring the youths involved in the attack and those who conspired behind the scenes to justice.
