Ernakulam: The Kerala High Court Division bench delivered its verdict today on the conviction of the accused in the TP Chandrasekharan murder case, who was the leader of the Revolutionary Marxist Party. The sentence was increased to double life imprisonment for the first accused through to the fifth and seventh accused, who were earlier sentenced to life imprisonment. The court also announced that all the accused will be allowed parole only after 20 years and increased the fine charged against them.

The verdict comes after an appeal seeking to increase the punishment of the accused. However, the High Court division bench did not sentence any of the accused to death.

On February 19, the Kerala High Court also nullified the trial court’s acquittal of two accused, including CPI(M) leader K K Krishnan and Jyothi Babu.

The division bench, comprising Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Kauser Edappagath, issued the verdict on the petition filed by Rema demanding maximum punishment for the first eight accused – MC Anoop, Kirmani Manoj, Kodi Suni, TK Rajeesh, Mohammed Shafi, Annan Sijith, K Shinoj, and KC Ramachandran – as well as the 11th accused, ‘trouser’ Manoj, in the case.

T P Chandrasekharan was hacked to death by a gang at around 10 pm on May 4, 2012, in Vadakara while he was returning home on his bike.
