Ernakulam: The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEOUK) Chairman Dileep said that theatres will continue screening new Malayalam films from March 1 onwards. This announcement was made in a press conference held in Kochi yesterday after FEOUK meeting.
FEOUK Chairman Dileep assured that ongoing challenges would be addressed through meetings with producers. The theatre owners are unwilling to go on strike by shutting down the theatres.
Last week, FEOUK made an announcement that no new Malayalam films would be screened in theatres associated with their organization. After this announcement, film producers and distributors came out against FEOUK’s decision.
One of the key grievances raised by FEOUK is the alleged violations of industry rules by film producers. Specifically, concerns have been raised about the early release of films on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms after their theatrical debut.
FEOUK said that, as per the existing agreement, films initially released in theatres are supposed to debut on OTT platforms only after 42 days of their theatrical release. However, many films opt for an early OTT release, even shortly after their theatrical run, despite having garnered significant box office revenue. This poses a significant setback for theatre owners.
Meanwhile, FEOUK has demanded a reduction in the producers’ share of theatrical revenue from 60 percent to 55 percent at the time of release.
