Motor Vehicle Department issues strict instructions on driving licence validity

Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has issued stringent instructions regarding the validity of driving licences, applicable to both new licence holders and renewals. These instructions were communicated through an official Facebook post.

According to the MVD’s notification:

For individuals who obtained or renewed their licences before September 1, 2019:

  • The licence remains valid until the completion of 20 years or reaching the age of 50, whichever comes earlier.
  • Subsequently, renewal is required every 5 years after turning 50.
  • Heavy Licence (Trans) holders must renew every 3 years.
  • Hazardous licence holders require yearly renewals.

For those acquiring or renewing licences after September 1, 2019:

  • Validity extends up to 40 years for individuals under 30 years old.
  • For ages between 30 and 50, validity is for 10 years.
  • Between 50 and 55 years, the licence is valid until 60 years.
  • Above 55 years, renewal is required every 5 years.
  • Heavy licence (Trans) duration is 5 years, with subsequent 5-year renewals.
  • Hazardous licence validity is for 3 years, with the need for endorsement upon expiration.
