ABVP welcomes Kerala University VC’s decision to suspend the cultural festival: Says that SFI is turning cultural fests into platforms of violence

Thiruvananthapuram: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has welcomed the order by the Kerala University Vice Chancellor to temporarily withhold the Kerala University Youth Festival 2024. ABVP has responded, stating that campuses dominated by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the venues for arts festivals in Kerala are becoming centers of violence and intoxication.

ABVP has pointed out that SFI, a left-wing student organization, is instigating violence within educational institutes in Kerala. ABVP have highlighted that SFI members are exerting dominance over campuses in Kerala and controlling cultural festivals.

ABVP pointed out that SFI is monopolizing campuses through violence, preventing members of other student organizations from participating in cultural events. ABVP also accused SFI of physically and mentally harassing and torturing students. The cultural festivals intended for students’ creative developments are now being dominated by SFI as platforms for violence.

Following numerous complaints against SFI, Kerala University Vice Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal, today, has directed the cancellation of competitions and result announcements. Complaints were particularly raised regarding competitions such as ‘Margam Kali’ and ‘Thiruvathira Kali,’ prompting the decision to halt competitions where conflicts emerged after result announcements.

On March 4th, Vice Chancellor Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal issued an order to remove the title ‘Intifada’ from the Kerala University Youth Festival 2024 after the ABVP filed a complaint with the Kerala High Court demanding the removal of the name ‘Intifada’. ABVP argued that the term ‘Intifada’, associated with the Hamas-Israel war, should not be used as the name of the University Arts Festival.

The petition also argues that discussions about war should not take place on the stages of the Kerala University Youth Festival 2024, as topics of this nature can lead to issues and division among student groups.
