Thiruvananthapuram: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) has come into force in the country. But Kerala Chief Minister is standing strong in his statement that CAA will not be implemented in Kerala.
It is understood that the state government’s permission is not required to implement the CAA. But Pinarayi Vijayan keeps reiterating that CAA will not come into existence in Kerala. According to him, CAA is a law aimed at driving away the Muslim population of the society.
The central government had earlier clarified that CAA is not a law to take away anyone’s citizenship. CAA is to grant citizenship to non-Muslims (Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, Christian) who have migrated to India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan seeking asylum.
But the government of Kerala that has been at logger heads with the central government is not agreeing to reason with the objectives of the center implementing CAA.
Reiterating the leftist approach, the Chief Minister said that the Citizenship Amendment Act, which treats Muslim minorities as second-class citizens, will not be implemented in Kerala. Claiming that the CAA is a communal division law, he said that, Kerala will stand united in opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. His response was through a Facebook post.
The Union home ministry on Monday notified the rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), over four years after Parliament passed the law, to fast-track the citizenship process for non-Muslims, who have entered India from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh before December 31, 2014.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also announced that the CAA portal will be launched soon for those who want to apply for citizenship.
