Thimphu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the hospital ‘Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuk Mother and Child Hospital’ today in Thimphu, Bhutan, which was built with assistance from the Government of India. The hospital, equipped with all modern facilities, serves as a prime example of the Indo-Bhutan bilateral relationship.
The hospital, which has 150 beds, was constructed in two phases. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the first phase, operational since 2019, was completed at a cost of Rs 22 Crores. The second phase, initiated in 2019 at a cost of Rs. 119 Crores, has now been completed.

Reports indicate that the newly constructed hospital will significantly enhance the quality of mother-care and pediatric healthcare services in Bhutan. The facility features state-of-the-art amenities for Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Operation Theatre, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive Care.
After his two-day visit to Bhutan, PM Modi returned to India, bidding farewell to Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay at Thimphu Airport.
