While China supports Pakistan over Kashmir, it is unhappy with G7 backing Hong Kong’s autonomy

Beijing: China, which supports Pakistan’s claim of Indian aggression in Kashmir, is now dissatisfied with G7 for backing Hong Kong’s autonomy. The G7 also urged for peace after months of pro-democratic protests in Hong Kong.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang, said, “We express our strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the statement made by the leaders of the G7 Summit on Hong Kong affairs.”

He also added, “We have repeatedly stressed that Hong Kong’s affairs are purely China’s internal affairs and that no foreign government, organization or individual has the right to intervene.”

On Monday, the G7 leaders supported Hong Kong’s autonomy under the 1984 agreement between Britain and China. They called for peace in the semi-autonomous region.

China is accused the G7 countries of interference in their internal affairs saying that the international body was meddling and harbouring evil intentions.

Hong Kong is under the grip of pro-democratic protestors for the past 12 weeks. The protests erupted after the administration of the city announced a controversial extradition bill that would allow the authorities to send criminal suspects to China for prosecution.

Though, the authorities scrapped the bill, the pro-democratic protestors are calling for more democratic reforms in Hong Kong, which is a special administrative region of China. The protestors are against increasing influence of Chinese influence over Hong Kong.

China has refrained from using excessive force to quell the dissent but there is a suspicion that the Chinese authorities might directly intervene against Hong Kong protestors.

Interestingly, the Chinese are strongly backing Pakistan’s claims against India being aggressor in Kashmir and is trying to internationalize the issue. India has maintained that Kashmir is an internal matter of the country and do not wish for any third party intervention.
