London: The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, received a huge setback for his efforts to take Britain out of the European Union without a deal. He had advised the Queen to suspend the Parliament weeks before the date of Brexit so as to by-pass the Parliament and achieve his goal of a no deal Brexit.
However, the Supreme Court announced today that the decision of Boris Johnson to advice the Queen to suspend the Parliament is unlawful.
The Supreme Court President, Brenda Hale, said, “The decision to advise Her Majesty to prorogue parliament was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification.”
She added, “Parliament has not been prorogued. This is the unanimous judgment of all 11 justices.”
Hale also said, “It is for parliament, and in particular the speaker and the (House of) Lords speaker, to decide what to do next.”
This ruling by the Supreme Court will allow the lawmakers to question Boris Johnson’s decision to leave the EU without any deal. Currently, Johnson do not enjoy majority in the Parliament. Many of the lawmakers are not happy to leave the EU without any deal, which they say will lead to many problems in the future.
