Washington DC: Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abd al-Mahdi has assured the safety of US personnel said Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Thursday.

“Spoke today with Iraqi Prime Minister al-Mahdi, who agreed that #Iraq would continue to uphold its responsibility to keep U.S. personnel secure and would move the Iran-backed attackers away from @USEmbBaghdad. We’ll continue cooperation to hold #Iran and its proxies responsible,” tweeted Pompeo.

Thousands of protesters and militia fighters stormed into the US embassy in Baghdad after the US conducted strikes at five facilities linked to Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia in Iraq and Syria.

Pompeo also said, “Today’s attack against the U.S. Embassy should not be confused with the legitimate efforts of the Iraqi protesters who have been in the streets since October working for the people of Iraq to end the corruption exported there by the Iranian regime.”
