Islamabad: At least 97 people died in the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crash that took place on Friday in Karachi, reported Al Jazeera citing officials.

The report also says that two people have survived in the mishap. According to Health Ministry spokeswoman, Meeran Yousuf, 60 bodies have kept at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and 32 at Civi; Hospital Karachi.

The A320 Airbus was carrying passengers from Lahore to Karachi on PK 8303 when it crashed in a residential area near Karachi airport.

The crash sent plumes of smoke were into the air as rescue workers and residents searched the debris for people and as firefighters tried to extinguish the flames.

PIA said the plane lost contact with air traffic control just after 2:30 pm (0930 GMT) travelling from Lahore to Karachi.

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condoled on the incident on Friday.

“Deeply saddened by the loss of life due to a plane crash in Pakistan. Our condolences to the families of the deceased, and wishing speedy recovery to those injured,” he tweeted.
