Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wicramasinghe resigns

Columbo: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe resigns as public protests and riots enter the streets. Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed the party leaders that he is ready to pave the way for an all-party government. As per the constitution the speaker Yapa Abeywardena will be appointed as the interim president.

The demand for the resignation of the PM and the President was raised in the emergency meeting of the party leaders held at the speaker’s residence. Renil has informed his willingness to resign when the police and army forces joined in the protests. He was sworn in as the 6th Prime Minister on May 12th this year following the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka has been facing a huge economic crisis for a few months. The country was moving ahead by borrowing essentials such as medicine, petrol, electricity and food. The situation became even worse during the substantial devaluation of Sri Lankan currency . It is the government’s lack of interest in saving the country from the crisis made people angry and led them to the streets.

The decision to ban chemical fertilizers and use organic fertilizers also shook the country’s economy. Even other nations including India came forward with helping hands Sri Lanka’s crisis was beyond solution
