Gaza: A huge fire in the refugee camp in the Palestinian city of Gaza. 21 people were killed in the accident. The fire broke out in the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza. Among the dead there were 10 children.
Jabalia is one of eight refugee camps in Gaza. The cause of the accident is believed to be cooking gas leakage in the kitchen. It is reported that the entire building of the camp was burnt down in the fire. After hours of efforts, the fire was finally brought under control. The hospital authorities indicate that the death toll may rise further.
Action has been taken to evacuate all the injured ones to the hospital, said Israel Defence Minister Benny Gantz. The fire is “a national tragedy”, said Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas. He declared a day of mourning today.
Gaza, densely populated with 2.3 million people, has been under Israeli blockade since 2007. It is reported that around 6 lakh people live in eight different refugee camps.
