Quito: Family members of 76-year-old Bella Montoya got the biggest scare in their lives, when she woke up during her funeral service. The incident happened in Ecuador on June 9. Bella Montoya woke up after five hours into her remembrance service and began knocking at her coffin, which shocked her family.
According to reports, the doctors had declared Bella Montoya dead following possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest. The family members of Bella Montoya gathered for her funeral on June 9. But five hours into the wake the family members began hearing knocking sounds coming from inside her coffin.
Reports say that Bella Montoya’s son Gilberto Barbera said that the knocking sounds gave them a fright. His mother was wrapped in sheets and hitting the coffin. The family members opened the coffin and saw that she was breathing heavily and immediately transferred to the hospital.
The doctors said that Bella Montoya might have suffered catalepsy, which is a trancelike state in which body goes rigid and decreased sensitivity to pain. This might have caused by the cardio-respiratory arrest she had, said the report.
Ecuador’s health ministry confirmed that Bella Montoya is in intensive care on Monday and added that an investigation has begun into the doctors who treated her. Investigators will also look in to the hospital’s process of issuing death certificates.
