New York: India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, has presented a draft resolution on a ‘Memorial Wall for Fallen Peacekeepers’ at the UN Headquarters in New York. Kamboj expressed gratitude to the 190 delegations that have co-sponsored the initiative and extended an invitation to others to join. She emphasised the vital role of UN peacekeeping in mitigating conflicts and promoting global peace and security over the past 75 years.
Kamboj acknowledged the supreme sacrifice made by peacekeepers while carrying out the mandates requested by member states and emphasised the collective responsibility to ensure that their sacrifice is remembered and honoured. India pledged its support, including financial contributions, to establish the Memorial Wall at a prominent location within the UN headquarters. Kamboj highlighted the significance of the memorial as a testament to the UN’s commitment to peacekeeping and as a source of solace for the families and colleagues of fallen peacekeepers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed delight following the adoption of the resolution in the United Nations General Assembly. He conveyed his gratitude for the widespread support, stating that the resolution received a record 190 co-sponsorships. The adoption of the resolution coincided with PM Modi’s upcoming state visit to the US and his participation in the International Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations headquarters on June 21.
