Tripoli: So far, 52,000 people have tragically lost their lives in the floods in Libya, with many casualties resulting from the flood disaster following the storm Daniel, and approximately 10,000 individuals are reported missing in eastern Libya. Derna was particularly hard-hit by the floods in a highly perilous manner, with more than a thousand people losing their lives in this area alone.
Authorities are facing significant challenges in locating the bodies and conducting rescue operations in Derna. The heavy rainfall caused dams to burst in multiple locations in the area. Villages and cities alike are under the threat of floods, leading to the displacement of thousands of families in the main city of Benghazi. Hundreds have sought shelter in schools and government buildings.
Libya is currently witnessing immense suffering. The death toll is likely to rise,” stated Taymar Rama, Libya’s representative of the Red Cross-Red Crescent Society, as reported by Dan.
