New Jersey: The grand BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, acclaimed as the largest Hindu temple in the United States, has officially opened its doors in Robbinsville, New Jersey. Covering an area of 183 acres, the temple’s official inauguration was celebrated the previous day, and the general public will have the opportunity to visit starting on the 18th of this month.

This magnificent temple is a dedication to Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, a revered spiritual master who lived during the 19th century. The temple’s inspiration stems from Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual successor of Lord Swami Narayan. Its design is a testament to the creativity and dedication of a group of BAPS monks and volunteers hailing from India.

The construction of this architectural marvel was a massive undertaking, with the labour of more than 12,500 workers from North America contributing to its ealization. This ambitious project, which began in 2015, employed exquisite materials sourced from around the world, including marble from Italy and limestone from Bulgaria. These stones were meticulously polished by skilled artisans in India before being shipped to America for assembly.

Each stone used in the construction of Akshardham Temple possesses its own unique characteristics. A careful selection of four stone types, including limestone, pink sandstone, marble, and granite, was made to ensure the temple could withstand extreme temperature fluctuations. The involvement of experts from India further attests to the temple’s authenticity and craftsmanship.

The artisans, including Indians, who played a pivotal role in bringing this temple to life, did not see themselves as mere labourers but as dedicated volunteers, reflecting the deep spiritual commitment and collaborative effort that have gone into the creation of this remarkable sanctuary.
