Davos: Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), states that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a challenge for job security. She indicates that AI will impact 60 percent of jobs in the economies of developed countries, with a relatively lesser impact on developing countries—about 40 percent globally.
Kristalina Georgieva points out that AI threatens future jobs but also enhances productivity. She made these comments to media in Washington just before departing for the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The 54th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) is beginning today (January 15) and will continue until January 19, 2024, in Davos, Switzerland.
Georgieva notes that the impact of AI is higher in more skilled professions, as AI currently focuses on those areas, potentially increasing productivity.
She emphasizes that if AI is handled with care, it can open up huge opportunities for everyone. Georgieva’s term as Managing Director for the IMF, which began in 2019, is set to end this year. The tenure for the IMF Managing Director is elected for five years. Georgieva did not respond to media inquiries about whether she intends to contest for a second term.
