TASHKENT: Indian boxers Deepak Bhoria (51 kg), Mohammed Hussamuddin (57 kg) and Nishant Dev (71 kg) scripted history by ensuring three medals at the World Boxing Championships for the first time as they advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday in Tashkent. With this achievement, the three men pugilists assured themselves of at least bronze medals in the Championship.
Earlier, the best performance of the Indian men boxers were recorded in 2019 when Manish Kaushik clinched a silver medal and Amit Panghal grabbed a bronze medal.
After Deepak Bhorai (51 kg, an Olympic discipline) took down Nurzhigit Diushebaev of Kyrgyzstan by a 5-0 verdict, Mohammed Hussamuddin, engineered a tight 3-2 win over Bulgaria’s Diaz Ibanez, in the 57 kg discipline. Rounding off the winners was Nishant Dev (71 kg) who beat favourite, Cuba’s Jorge Cuellar, by a unanimous verdict.
The three Indians will be back in action on Friday to grab a place in the finals. No Indian men boxer has ever gone to win gold at this event. India has so far won a total of seven medals, including a silver, in the previous editions.
