New Delhi :Indian badminton stars PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen will headline the Indian challenge at the US Open 2023 badminton tournament, set to take place from July 11 to 16 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The prestigious tournament, which marks the 16th event on the BWF World Tour 2023 calendar, will feature live streaming of all matches.
PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, aims to bounce back after her recent semi-final finish at the Canada Open. Currently ranked 15th in the BWF world rankings, Sindhu lost to world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the last four of the BWF Super 500 tournament. The 28-year-old former world champion, seeded third at the US Open, is still vying for her first BWF World Tour title this year. Sindhu will face a qualifier in the opening round of the US Open.
Joining Sindhu in the women’s singles main draw is Gadde Ruthvika Shivani, while Imad Farooqui Samiya will begin her campaign from the qualifiers.
On the men’s side, Lakshya Sen enters the US Open fresh off his victory at the Canada Open 2023, where he clinched the men’s singles title. Currently ranked 19th in the world, the 21-year-old defeated reigning All England Open champion Li Shi Feng of China to claim his first silverware of the year. Seeded third at the US Open, Lakshya Sen will face world No. 51 Kalle Koljonen of Finland in the round of 32. B Sai Praneeth will also compete in the men’s singles main draw.
Parupalli Kashyap, the Commonwealth Games 2014 champion, will kick off his campaign in the qualifiers against Lucas Claerbout of France. S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian will also start in the qualifiers.
In the men’s doubles category, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala will be the sole Indian representatives, as star duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are absent. Garaga and Panjala will face Lin Yu Chieh and Su Li Wei of Chinese Taipei in their opening match.
Representing India in the women’s doubles, the pair of Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda will start in the main draw, alongside Apeksha Nayak and Ramya Chickmenhalli Venkatesh.
The US Open 2023 badminton tournament will be held at the Mid-America Center, showcasing the talents of top players from around the world. As the Indian squad sets their sights on success, badminton enthusiasts eagerly anticipate their performances and hope for a strong showing from the Indian contingent in the prestigious tournament.
