Asian Games Calendar: India clinches gold in Tennis

Hangzhou: In a thrilling display of skill and determination, the Indian mixed doubles tennis pair, Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale, orchestrated a remarkable comeback in the Asian Games 2023. Facing the ninth-seeded Tsung-hao Huang and En-shuo Liang from Chinese Taipei, the Indian duo secured victory with a dazzling 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 triumph in the finals.

This resounding win not only added another gold to India’s tally but also continued the nation’s extraordinary streak of achieving at least one gold medal in each of the six Asian Games editions in the 21st century.

For seasoned Indian tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna, this victory marked his second medal at the Asian Games. Previously, he clinched the men’s doubles gold at Jakarta 2018. The recent success with Rutuja Bhosale serves as a significant turnaround for Bopanna, who faced an unexpected setback earlier in the week when he shockingly exited the men’s doubles competition with partner Yuki Bhambri—a pair widely expected to secure the gold.

On the other hand, for Rutuja Bhosale, the win in the mixed doubles final represents her maiden medal at the continental meet, adding a noteworthy achievement to her burgeoning tennis career.

India’s triumph in tennis at the Hangzhou Asian Games doesn’t end with the mixed doubles victory. The duo of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni secured the silver medal in men’s doubles after a hard-fought final against the Chinese Taipei pair of Jason Jung and Yu-hsiou Hsu.
