New Delhi: Rohan Kunnummal, the dynamic opener from Kerala, has garnered attention in the cricketing world with his impressive performance in the Deodhar Trophy, leading to a trial opportunity with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, the Delhi Capitals.
Rohan amassed a total of 311 runs at an average of 62.20 during the Deodhar Trophy, a feat that significantly contributed to South Zone emerging as the champions of the prestigious tournament last week. Notably, the 25-year-old’s batting prowess secured him the third spot on the list of highest run-scorers, trailing only behind Riyan Parag (354 runs) and Mayank Agarwal (341 runs).
What sets Rohan’s performance apart is not just his run tally but also his exceptional strike rate of 123.90 in the one-day championship, showcasing his ability to accelerate the scoring rate when needed. This outstanding display of cricketing prowess did not go unnoticed, resulting in a coveted invitation from the Delhi Capitals to join their training camp.
A true highlight of Rohan’s recent achievements was his remarkable century in the Deodhar Trophy final against the formidable East Zone. Reflecting on his standout performance, Rohan expressed his delight at contributing to South Zone’s overall success in the tournament. He emphasised the significance of maintaining consistent intensity across matches rather than focusing solely on one standout performance.
“It was a really good start to the season. I am happy to contribute to the team’s success, especially the way South Zone won the tournament, winning all six matches. Yes, it was a big occasion. I believe each and every match I need to bat with the same intensity, not just in one match,” he remarked.
In recognition of his remarkable achievements, Rohan was quick to acknowledge the influence of his captain and senior opening partner, Mayank Agarwal. He credited Agarwal for his guidance and mentorship, highlighting their prior experience of batting together during the Duleep Trophy last year.
“It was really nice to bat alongside Mayank Bhai.” I batted with him in the Duleep Trophy last year as well, so we have the experience of batting with each other. He [Agarwal] guided me very well, telling me how to watch for each ball and helping me control my thoughts while in the middle,” Rohan added.
