Thiruvananthapuram: Congress MP Hibi Eden is under severe criticism for introducing a private bill in Parliament proposing transfer of capital from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi.
Hibi Eden’s strange proposal has also not gone down well within the Congress party also with many leaders saying that such a proposal is impractical and is not Congress’ decision.
Congress leader K Muraleedharan slammed Hibi Eden’s move to introduce the private bill saying that it was wrong. He added that he did not know why Hibi Eden took such a stand.
Other Congress leaders like Shashi Tharoor, Adoor Prakash, KS Sabarinath etc. also criticized the MP’s proposal. A report said that Hibi Eden’s private bill has left Congress in a fix to explain the party’s MPs action to those living in Thiruvananthapuram and nearby districts. It has also led to a campaign in Thiruvananthapuram against the Ernakulam MP and against Congress party.
The Opposition leader, VD Satheesan, has come out against the proposal and clarified that Congress has never discussed about it. He also said that Hibi Eden did not consult with the party before moving the private bill.
Satheesan further said that he has demanded that the MP withdraw the bill. He also said that Congress did not want Kochi as the capital of Kerala and that the city does not have enough space to be a capital city. Kochi is already crowded, said the opposition leader.
He also said that the matter will not be discussed further in a bid to put a lid to the controversy that arose from Hibi Eden’s strange demand.
Hibi Eden, the Member of Parliament from Ernakulam had moved the private bill in March of this year. The matter came to light when the Union Home Ministry sent a letter to the state government to take an immediate decision on the matter.
The Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, rejected the demand and said that the proposal was impractical.
