Kozhikode: Heightening the state’s health concerns, a five-year-old boy from Chevarambalam in Chevayur, Kozhikode, has been confirmed to have Japanese Encephalitis (JE), a mosquito-borne viral disease. Reports indicate that the confirmation came from the test conducted at the microbiology department of the Medical College in Kozhikode.

The young toddler was admitted to the IMCH on July 15, exhibiting symptoms of high fever, neck pain, and headaches. Prompt action was taken to diagnose the illness, and the samples have been dispatched to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for further examination and verification.

Japanese Encephalitis is known to cause severe health complications, and according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), common symptoms include headache, fever, mental confusion, and delirium. With the recent confirmation of this viral disease in a child, Kerala’s health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any potential outbreaks and ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.

As Kerala grapples with consecutive disease cycles such as Denku and Rat-bite-fever, this recent confirmation emphasizes the crucial need for vigilant disease surveillance and effective control measures. These include prioritizing immunization efforts, avoiding close contacts with infected individuals, and seeking the assistance of healthcare workers in the region.
