Cataracts confirmed in both eyes of wild tusker PT 7, surgery currently not an option, says doctor

Palakkadu: Recent examinations conducted by a medical team led by Dr. Arun Zacharia have confirmed the presence of cataracts in both eyes of the wild tusker PT 7, who was captured in Palakkadu from the Dhoni region. The doctor has determined that performing surgery is not feasible under the current circumstances. Additionally, it has been deduced that the tusker’s aggressive behaviour may be attributed to its vision problems. In light of this, the Forest Department has decided against confining the elephant to a cage.

Treatment for PT 7’s left eye began four days ago, following its release from a cage on the 7th of this month. The Forest Department has reported that the elephant is cooperating well with the treatment and has remained calm throughout. Nevertheless, the prospect of surgery appears highly improbable. Earlier, veterinary doctors had expressed concerns about the delay in addressing PT 7’s loss of eyesight.

PT 7, which had terrorized the residents of the Dhoni region in Palakkad, was tranquillized after relentless efforts by a task force with the help of Kumki elephants eight months back.
