New Delhi: Cold wave continued its grip over North Bharat on Thursday with dense fog shrouded major cities, including Delhi, reducing visibility and impacting air and train travel. Today the mercury level reached below the freezing point (minus 1.7 degrees) in the Fatehpur district of Rajasthan.

Delhi experienced shivers with an overall temperature recorded at 8.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday, accompanied by thick fog. Homeless individuals sought refuge in shelter homes to escape the biting cold. Railway officials reported delays for as many as 24 trains expected to arrive late in Delhi on Thursday due to widespread fog across the country.  Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a temperature as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius.

In Bihar’s Motihari district, a sixth-grade student named Manish Kumar lost his life to the prevailing cold wave. The student collapsed during morning prayers at his school and, despite being rushed to the local hospital, succumbed to the harsh weather conditions. Over 40 districts in Madhya Pradesh experienced thick fog, disrupting daily life and causing reduced visibility.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense fog is anticipated to persist during morning hours in isolated places of northwest Bharat over the next three to four days. The IMD also noted that cold day to severe cold day conditions are expected to alleviate over northwest Bharat starting today.
